1.  Name the three fundamental particles of an atom.  Discuss their important properties.

 

2.  If you are given the complete chemical symbol for an atom or ion, how can you determine the number of each kind of particle in the atom or ion?

 

3.  Define the term isotope.  Explain how and element’s atomic mass is related to the abundances of it’s different isotopes.

 

4.  Critical Thinking-Interpreting Data:

          In the periodic table, some atomic masses are written with only a few significant figures.  Others are written with as many as 7-8 significant figures.  Use your knowledge of how atomic mass is calculated to explain these differences.
