Study Guide for Chemistry Chapter 7!!!

Define the following terms, answer the following questions for homework over the next week and a half.  Your test will be on Monday January 28th  and Tuesday January 29th, 2002.  This assignment will be due on those days!

Define the following terms:

Ionic bonds            Polyatomic ion                           Nonpolar

Covalent bonds       Binary ionic compound                Hydrate

Ionic compound      Empirical formula                      Anyhydrous substance

Cation                    Molecule                                   Double bond

Anion                     Lewis structure                         Triple bond

Octet Rule             Unshared pair

Monoatomic ion      Polar

Short answer questions: (answer these questions)

1) How do ionic bonds and ionic substances differ from covalent bonds and molecules?

2) Compare empirical, molecular, and structural formulas.  Under what circumstances is each type of formula most useful?

3) Ozone has the molecular formula O3. Does ozone contain nonpolar, polar, or ionic bonds?

4) Why is potassium fluoride more stable than potassium and fluoride that make it up?

5) Describe the differences between single, double, and triple bonds. Use specific compounds to illustrate your answer.

6) Explain what an acid is and why the cation in an acid is hydrogen.

7) Be able to name compounds from either, anions and cations given, polyatomic anions and polyatomic cations given, acids, or the name of the compound and give the elements that make it up.

MULTIPLE choice 20 questions (45 points) (With review questions)

Bonus section: 10 points on material from chapter 8.

As Always: YOU WILL GET 10 EXTRA POINTS ON THE TEST IF YOU TAKE NOTES ON EVERY SECTION OF CHAPTER 7.
